World Cup in Ruhpolding: Biathlete Zobel is “ultra keen” on a relay mission

Before the start of the men’s relay at the Biathlon World Cup in Ruhpolding, David Zobel is looking forward to playing in front of his home crowd. He gave his teammates tips on how to deal with the atmosphere.

Biathlete David Zobel leads the German relay at the home game in Ruhpolding as starting runner. Today (2:25 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport) is the 26-year-old’s first appearance in the men’s team this season.

“I was incredibly happy to be able to run and I didn’t care what position I was in. I’m super keen,” said Zobel. Together with Johannes Kühn, Benedikt Doll and Roman Rees, the quartet of the German Ski Association should also get a podium finish in the third relay race of the winter. Norway has won the previous two competitions.

Especially the home crowd motivates Zobel. “This is my first home World Cup with spectators. It was a great feeling,” said the Bavarian about his impressions after the individual race on Wednesday. “I was a bit surprised at the first shooting at how loud it is, even though the trainer told me it could be much louder.”

His teammates, who started one day later, were also able to benefit from Zobel’s experience in front of 10,000 spectators. “I was really happy that it was the guys’ turn first and they could give you tips,” said Vanessa Voigt, who finished Thursday’s individual race as the best German in eleventh place. “David said to me yesterday: Watch out at the shooting range, it’s going to be really loud. You really think they’re behind you,” said the Thuringian.

The German team also found many other words of praise for the atmosphere. “It was really casual here,” commented Sophia Schneider on the mood. “Being able to run in front of the backdrop is a childhood dream that has just come true,” said Juliane Frühwirt, who returned from the World Cup. “It’s just so incredible to be able to experience that.”
