Tennis Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will probably be supported by a prominent fan in the stands during his first round match at the Australian Open.
Basketball icon Dirk Nowitzki, with whom Zverev hit a few balls last week at Melbourne Park, apparently wants to watch Zverev’s game on Tuesday (7:00 a.m.CET) against the Spanish qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas live on site. “He told me that he will be there Monday and Tuesday. I think he will also be there for my match,” said Zverev in an interview with the Eurosport broadcaster.
Nowitzki was a passable tennis player in his youth before he switched to basketball. “He plays tennis very well,” said Zverev: “He wrote to me the day before that he was in Melbourne, coming to the facility and it would be nice to meet up. We booked a place and a few balls beaten, that was also very pleasant.”
Seven and a half months after suffering a serious foot injury in the French Open semifinals, the 25-year-old feels ready to return to the Grand Slam stage. “I’m healthy, I feel good, I can move freely and play freely, that’s the main thing. We’ll see the rest,” said the Hamburger: “Of course I still have to find my form, I have to play matches for that . If I play a few matches here, then I think I’ll find my way into the tournament.”
