A formal error cost Germany’s women’s cross-country relay team its first World Cup podium in over six years. Just a short time after second place on Sunday in Toblach, Italy, Peter Schlickenrieder’s team was disqualified.

The team boss himself took full responsibility for this. “I reported Coletta Rydzek’s replacement due to illness too late. My mistake,” said the ARD team boss.

Made up of Laura Gimmler, Katharina Hennig, Pia Fink and Sofie Krehl, the German quartet was only beaten by the winning relay team from Norway after 4×7.5 kilometers. According to Schlickenrieder, Krehl, who stepped in for Rydzek at short notice, should have been registered for the race earlier. As the last runner, Krehl even had a chance of winning, but ended up behind Silje Theodorsen. The highly rated Swedes moved up to second place due to the German form error, the USA took third place.

Second place in January 2017 in Ulricehamn, Sweden, remains the last German women’s World Cup podium. Hennig was already there in second place behind Norway, with Stefanie Böhler, Sandra Ringwald and Victoria Carl also starting. Last year, Germany also amazed at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Led by Hennig and Carl, there was silver in the relay, the duo even won Olympic gold in the team sprint. The highlight of the season this winter is the World Championships, which begin on February 21 in Planica, Slovenia.
