Bundesliga: Media: Hoffenheim separates from coach Breitenreiter

Originally, Hoffenheim had given the goal of participating in the European Cup and even hired a master coach. But he will no longer be in office for the next game against Leverkusen.

According to media reports, coach André Breitenreiter has been on leave at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim after the fall in the relegation battle.

There was no confirmation from the troubled Bundesliga club on Sunday evening. According to “Bild” and “Kicker”, however, the Kraichgauer have drawn the consequences from the series of ten competitive games without a win with the 2: 5 on Saturday at VfL Bochum.

There had previously been a crisis talk in Zuzenhausen with the management and sports director Alexander Rosen. “The fact is that something has to happen,” Breitenreiter himself said in Bochum. He came to the Kraichgau last summer as the master coach of FC Zurich and, after a strong start in the league, was temporarily in fourth place with his team – but has now fallen completely and seems increasingly helpless. The Hoffenheim team are 14th and only three points ahead of their national rivals VfB Stuttgart in the relegation zone. The last league win so far was at FC Schalke 04 in mid-October.

Clear words after bankruptcy in Bochum

Breitenreiter’s contract with TSG runs until June 30, 2024. In Bochum he expressed his anger at his weak team with clear words. “I can’t accept what I saw today in any way. It has nothing to do with professional football,” said the former head coach of Hannover 96, SC Paderborn and Schalke 04 after the debacle. “I will certainly not put up with that anymore.”

Rosen avoided a clear commitment to the coach, but he did not criticize him explicitly either. “I say it’s an issue to question and discuss everything,” said the manager when asked if separating from Breitenreiter was an issue. The ten games without a win “give us all no arguments. I say consciously: all of us.” With a view to the similar misery in the past second half of the season under Hoeneß, the 43-year-old explained: “It’s too easy to just take one. Maybe we have to ask bigger questions here.”

In view of the downturn, Breitenreiter obviously no longer had any support from majority owner Dietmar Hopp. The 82-year-old patron and billionaire had already stormed at the general meeting last summer that missing out on Europa League participation would cost the club around 20 million euros, and missing out on the Champions League “much, much more”. At that time, Sebastian Hoeneß had to go after a similar negative series as his successor Breitenreiter is now responsible for.

Training-free Monday cancelled

TSG has long been criticized for being something of an oasis of well-being for football professionals. The self-proclaimed training club, which recently sold French striker Georginio Rutter to Leeds United for up to €40m, is seen by many as a springboard. Or for long-time players who will no longer go to a really big club, as a secure career station.

The training-free Monday was canceled for captain Oliver Baumann and Co. – regardless of the question of the coach. TSG also showed blatant defense weaknesses in Bochum, although John Anthony Brooks was only recently signed. Rosen also signed Danish World Cup striker Kasper Dolberg and ex-Dortmund player Thomas Delaney. Shortly before his tenth anniversary at the beginning of April, the director of professional football has to be asked more and more often whether he put the team together correctly. Whether she can also fight relegation is a completely different question.
