The 35-year-old Serb reached the 377th week of his career as the world number one. The 22-time Grand Slam champion matched Graf’s record, which also held the top position for women for so long. Next week, the Serb will return to the ATP tour after winning the Australian Open at the tournament in Dubai.
The coming weeks will be marked by a duel between Djokovic and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz for first place. The second in the world rankings reported back after a long injury break by winning the tournament in Buenos Aires and is at the tournament in Rio de Janeiro this week, as is Dominic Thiem (still in the first round when this issue went to print).
Alcaraz climbed to the top of the ATP rankings in September 2022 after winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open. Then an abdominal muscle injury slowed him down. “I want to be back on the throne soon,” said the 19-year-old after beating Cameron Norrie (GB) 6-3, 7-5 in the final.
