Ski jumping hope Andreas Wellinger sees his status in the German team unchanged even with a few years of experience.
“I’ve definitely developed personally over the years, but I would say that in my role I’m the same jumping jack that I’ve always been,” said the 27-year-old Olympic champion of the German Press Agency. After Wellinger recently won two individual World Cups after a long lull, he is considered a medal candidate at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica.
“I’m someone who’s always up for a stupid joke. I bring a certain amount of fun and relaxation to the team. I try to keep getting better for myself and to help the boys,” Wellinger described his role in the team of national coach Stefan Horngacher. The top jumper sees the Tyrolean as one of the main reasons for his regained strength. “I really appreciate him because he puts his finger in the wound. That’s not always easy as an athlete. That’s his strength, that he doesn’t mince his words,” said Wellinger about Horngacher.
