“I don’t know what’s wrong with us in refereeing. Overall, they’re just bad, you just have to say that,” said the defender in the Sky interview. The performance of referee Stefan Ebner, who was on duty at Altach – WSG, was described by Behounek as “inferior” and cited the early yellow card for his club colleague Kofi Schulz as an example. “Then he (note: Ebner) comes to me during the break and says it wasn’t a foul and it wasn’t a yellow card. I think that’s no good for us.”
According to Behounek, refereeing errors are practically the order of the day in the top two leagues. “It goes through every week,” said the 25-year-old, referring to controversial penalties at Horn – GAK, Rapid II – FAC and LASK – Austria Lustenau. “It’s pointless anyway that I say something because nothing changes anyway, but I would like to say it now, maybe something will change at some point. Maybe the referees will get better,” explained Behounek.
