Now it is also mathematically fixed. Marco Odermatt has managed to defend his title in the Alpine Ski World Cup. Due to the fact that his pursuer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde has officially not started in Kranjska Gora since Thursday, the Swiss can no longer take his second big crystal globe after 2021/22.
Kilde is missing from the Norwegian FA’s squad for the giant slalom events on Saturday and Sunday in Slovenia. He can win at most 300 points at the season finale in Andorra next week because he doesn’t do special slaloms. However, he is already 386 points behind Odermatt. Kilde had recently congratulated his rival fairly and announced his resignation.
Odermatt is only the second Swiss after Pirmin Zurbriggen to win the big crystal ball more than once. Zurbriggen managed the feat four times (1984, 1987, 1988 and 1990).
Odermatt has thus managed to crown a fabulous season. In addition to two gold medals at the World Championships in Courchevel, he has had nine victories so far this season and has been on the podium 18 times in 22 World Cup races. As a result, the 25-year-old experienced almost no outliers of the negative kind. Only in Kitzbühel did things not go according to plan. On the descent he damaged the meniscus in his knee and had to skip the Schladming giant slalom.
