DFB President Bernd Neuendorf would like more political support in his own country with a view to the 2024 European Football Championship.
“In a conversation with Chancellor Olaf Scholz during the international match of our women’s national team in Duisburg, I said that the commitment of politicians and the understanding of what a chance such a tournament is, was greater before the 2006 World Cup in Germany,” said Neuendorf in an interview published by the German Football Association (DFB) on the occasion of its first anniversary as president.
He is “very aware” that there are currently many important social issues, such as the war in Ukraine and the current inflation. “But these European Championships are a unique opportunity to present our country beyond football, both culturally and economically,” said the 61-year-old association boss. The tournament will take place from June 14 to July 14, 2024, with 51 matches scheduled. The DFB hopes to trigger a similar enthusiasm as in 2006 with the World Cup.
