Alexander Zverev fought his way into the round of 16 at the tournament in the Californian desert. But the Hamburger is not only in the limelight on the tennis court.
Olympic champion Alexander Zverev described himself as the worse player after reaching the round of 16 at the Tennis Masters in Indian Wells.
“From the second set he played much, much better than me. In the third set I found that he was the better player and I just found a way,” said the 25-year-old of the German Press Agency after the 7: 5, 1: 6, 7: 5 against the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.
He didn’t play his best tennis, “I was far away from that. But I’ve always had my difficulties with the conditions here and lost 7: 6 in the third for the last two years. Today I just found a way to win. I I’m still in the tournament, that’s the main thing for me,” said Zverev. At the $10.1 million hard court tournament, Zverev had to fight on the center court in the midday sun for 2:40 hours and leave a very weak second set behind.
Now Medvedev is waiting as the next opponent
In his career it is the third round of 16 participation in the competition in the Californian desert. The man from Hamburg has never made it past the quarter-finals. It was only the second time he had won at least two games in a row at a tournament since suffering a serious ankle injury at the French Open last summer. “It is especially important now after this phase to win such matches,” he said.
In the round of 16 he now has to deal with former world number one Daniil Medvedev from Russia, who has been playing in impressive form for weeks.
Netflix documentary “Break Point” with Zverev
Zverev is one of the protagonists in the second season of the Netflix series “Break Point”. Camera teams followed him and his support team in Indian Wells. “This is Netflix, yes,” said Zverev. “I made my film with RTL last year and it will be out next week. I’m used to it, I’m not camera shy or anything.”
“Break Point” is a documentary series published on the streaming portal Netflix, which – similar to Formula 1 “Drive to Survive” – gives an insight into the sport. The second season is scheduled for 2024. The RTL documentary “Zverev – The Unfinished” will run on RTL+ from March 19th.
