The interruption was caused by the Dane Kevin Magnussen, who crashed into the barriers with his Haas. The International Automobile Federation announced that the race was interrupted because tire parts were widely distributed.

After an accident involving Alexander Albon, the Grand Prix Down Under had previously been interrupted for around 15 minutes. The Thai pilot had gone off the track in his Williams and crashed into the barriers.
