The then 36-year-old Serb is not vaccinated against Covid-19 and therefore had to skip the last Grand Slam tournament of 2022. He has also missed several overseas Masters tournaments and the Australian Open last year. As of May 11, the US government is lifting the vaccination requirements for international travelers.
Djokovic had applied for special permission for the Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami this year, but did not receive it. In the previous year, after having already arrived in Melbourne, he first had to go to a deportation hotel and then leave again before the Australian Open after a sensational court case.
Djokovic remained true to his attitude afterwards and said he would not play a tournament for which vaccination against the Covid 19 virus is mandatory. The world number one has won three of his 22 majors in Flushing Meadows.
