ATP tournament in Madrid: Struff after the final: “Hope it gives me a push”

After an impressive performance at the Masters tournament in Madrid, tennis pro Jan-Lennard Struff ended up with a bitter defeat in the final. The 33-year-old still takes a lot of positive things with him.

Tennis pro Jan-Lennard Struff hopes his strong tournament performance in Madrid will have a positive effect in the coming weeks.

“It’s crazy, it was the best tournament of my career. That’s good, I hope it gives me a push,” said the 33-year-old Warsteiner on TV channel Sky after his final defeat against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz Look at the French Open starting in three weeks. Despite a strong performance, Struff lost 4: 6, 6: 3, 3: 6 to the second in the world rankings.

“Although I’m disappointed today, I’m of course happy about the last two weeks. That’s something absolutely special for me,” said Struff after reaching the final for the first time in a tournament in the second highest category. He described the defeat in the final against Alcaraz as a “bitter match”. “It’s a shame because there were chances. I gave it my all, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough in the end.”

Into the final as a lucky loser

Struff was actually eliminated in the qualification in Madrid, but made it into the main draw after another player canceled. Reaching the final as a so-called lucky loser was something no other professional in the history of the Masters had managed to do. “It was just fun being here on the court,” said Struff.

The Sauerlander wants to do without the upcoming Masters tournament in Rome. “Of course I would have liked to play in Rome. Unfortunately, I would have had to play qualifying tomorrow, which we then canceled,” said Struff on Sunday evening. Instead, he now wants to treat himself to two days off with his family. “I’m looking forward to going home, then I’ll train again and realign myself,” he announced. “Then we’ll see.”
