Braunauer missed entry in Austria’s boxing history
Ahmed Hagag

Ahmed Hagag narrowly missed Austria’s first world championship medal in boxing on Wednesday.

Born in Braunau, he had to admit defeat to the Spaniard Ayoub Ghadfa after winning the first round in the quarter-finals of the title fights in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Nonetheless, fifth place is the 23-year-old super heavyweight’s best World Championship result to date, counted from impact hits in round three.

The World Cup, which several nations have stayed away from in protest, does not count towards the Olympic qualification. The first starting places for Paris 2024 will be allocated at the European Games in Poland at the end of June. Photo: AIBA/OÖN
