Golf pro Stephan Jäger has a chance of making the cut at the PGA Championship. The native of Munich, who lives in the USA, was two shots over par after the first 16 holes and was thus clearly on course for the top 50 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester.

However, like 29 other players, he had to end his opening round prematurely and play to the end on Friday morning (local time). This was due to a two hour delay in the morning due to frost which meant it was getting too dark for the late starting golfers.

It was therefore initially unclear whether PGA Tour newcomer Eric Cole could defend his narrow lead over Bryson DeChambeau. With four holes to play, the 34-year-old American was five strokes under par, his compatriot DeChambeau was four strokes under par after his round of 66. Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson and Canadian Corey Conners were all one stroke up shared third place.

Paul is threatened

Despite the ambiguity at the major tournament in the US state of New York, things are not looking good for Yannik Paul from Mannheim. With a lap of 76, he was tied for 117th place, and he clearly threatens to miss the cut. Only the top 70 golfers make it to the weekend two rounds at Oak Hill Country Club.

Paul wanted to collect valuable points for a possible place in the European Ryder Cup team. In the past few months, the native of Frankfurt had developed into a serious candidate for Team Europe with top results on the DP World Tour. For the first two rounds, Yannik Paul will play alongside Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who started with a round of 72 and was level with Jäger.

Kaymer and Woods are missing

Martin Kaymer canceled his start at the $15 million event on the advice of his doctor. The 38-year-old from Mettmann, who won his first of two major titles at the 2010 PGA Championship, is still suffering from a wrist injury.

Superstar Tiger Woods is also absent from Oak Hill Country Club. The 47-year-old Californian is recovering from surgery on his right foot. The 15-time major champion had to retire from the US Masters in mid-April due to injury. It is not yet clear when he will return to the golf course. Woods broke his right leg multiple times in a serious car accident in February 2021. Since then, the crowd favorite has only played in very few tournaments on the US tour.
