Premier League: “Boss” van Gerwen shows off after seventh darts title

Darts legend Phil Taylor’s Premier League record is history. For Michael van Gerwen the record is “a nice extra”.

Premier League triumphant Michael van Gerwen really liked his role. When a reporter asked him in the cramped London press room whether he was still the boss on the darts tour, the Dutchman grinned with relish.

“Do you really want me to answer that question? I’m always the boss. Even if I’m not the favourite, I’m still the man to beat,” said van Gerwen. He had previously won the Premier League again with a 11-5 win over Welsh favorites Gerwyn Price.

His seventh Invitational title made him the sole record winner, having previously tied with long-departed Arrows legend Phil Taylor. Van Gerwen called the record “a nice extra”, on the big stage he let his emotions run free after the victories over Price and England’s world champion Michael Smith (10:8).

“I think I played fantastic darts today. What more could I wish for than winning this trophy for the seventh time?” asked van Gerwen. He’s far from finished. “I love what I do – there’s more to come,” announced the title winner.

There are exciting weeks ahead in the darts scene. Englishman Smith leads the rankings, van Gerwen and Price are his toughest opponents at the moment. In just three weeks (15th to 18th June) the world elite will be guests in Frankfurt am Main for the World Team Championships. Then the German duo Gabriel Clemens and Martin Schindler want to fight for a major title.
