Because promotion competitor Heidenheim was 1:2 behind against Jahn Regensburg at the same time, direct promotion seemed perfect for Hamburg. Fans who had traveled with them stormed the pitch in Sandhausen and cheered about the supposed promotion. But then a small football miracle happened. Heidenheim benefited from the eleven minutes of stoppage time and turned the game into a 3-2 win. That meant the championship in the 2nd division and direct promotion to the Bundesliga, while HSV had to go into relegation against Stuttgart.
