Both the players from Tuscany and the Londoners want to escape international insignificance with a final triumph. The last European successes of both clubs are so long ago that the competitions no longer exist: In 1961 the Italians won the European Cup Winners’ Cup, West Ham triumphed in the same competition four years later. In 1966 Florence won the Mitropacup. The English, after all in the Europa League semifinals last year, still have an Intertoto Cup victory from 1999 on their credit side.
