The 43-year-old won the 7.1 km long vertical competition after climbing 1,020 meters to the Elferhütte in the Stubaital. With a winning time of 48:14 minutes, the Upper Austrian had a 37-second lead over second-placed Kenyan Philaries Jeruto Kisang. Grayson Murphy of the USA took bronze.
“I’m so happy, I can’t describe it,” said the Gmunden doctor at the finish. “My race started where it got steep. There I passed one after the other until I was leading.” In the meantime, Kisang took the lead again before being defeated by the grand dame of mountain running on the steep finish slope. “In the steep, the spectators told me that the Kenyan looked bad. That’s when I realized I could do it,” said Mayr in the winner’s interview.
The triumph at the home World Cup means a lot to her. “It’s all the better that I was able to win again here.”
Kenyan Patrick Kipngeno won the men’s race in 40:18 minutes ahead of Levi Kiprotich from Uganda and compatriot Josphat Kiprotich (KEN). Best Austrian was Manuel Innerhofer in 29th place, Martin Mattle was 34th.
