The Spaniard set the fastest lap of 1:20.912 minutes on the high-speed track in Monza, to the delight of thousands of Scuderia fans. Sainz relegated world champion Max Verstappen to second place in the Red Bull on Saturday with a wafer-thin lead of just 0.086 seconds. Record champion Lewis Hamilton finished third in the Mercedes.
One day after the best time in the second free practice session, Sainz once again delighted the Tifosi with the fastest lap. His Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc improved to fourth just before the end of the session.
Before the 14th Grand Prix of the season on Sunday, Verstappen leads the drivers’ standings by a wide margin. After nine wins in a row, he is 138 points clear of teammate Sergio Perez.
