Paris 2024: This is what Germany’s basketball players can expect at the Olympics

Paris follows Tokyo. The German basketball players have again qualified for the Olympics. This time the big leader should also be allowed to play.

After the German basketball team qualified for the Olympics, national coach Gordon Herbert was proud.

“One of the hardest things for European teams is to qualify for the Olympics. Ten of the top 13 teams are from Europe. It’s a great achievement that the team has done. These players deserve a lot of respect, it’s well deserved,” said Herbert, after the ticket for Paris 2024 had been bought – a win by the Canadian basketball players over Slovenia after their own semi-final entry was decisive.

The World Cup semi-finalists Germany and Serbia are sure to be there and can save themselves the detour via another qualifying tournament in the summer of 2024. But first, the eagerly awaited semifinals at Manila’s Mall of Asia Arena await. “We’re not done yet. Our goal is still a medal,” said head coach Herbert. What awaits basketball players in France next summer?

Football stadium

The basketball players will not experience a large part of the games in Paris, but in Lille, 220 kilometers to the north. The preliminary round takes place there in the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, where football matches actually take place. The 2015 European Basketball Championship and the 2016 European Football Championship were played in the arena. The German basketball players missed the games in Lille back then because they didn’t make it to the round of 16. For the knockout round, the Olympics will go back to Paris, to the Accor Arena.

Schroeder debut

Dennis Schröder missed the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo for insurance reasons. He can still make his debut in Paris in 2024. The 29-year-old looks forward to the big event in France. It is also the end of a three-year plan that began with the home European Championship in 2022, continued with the current World Cup in Asia and will end under the Olympic rings.

Well-known competition

The fight for the medals at the Olympics is likely to be as tough as at the World Cup, after all, the traditional event attracts numerous basketball stars. Host France should start with super talent Victor Wembanyama. The USA and Canada can be expected with concentrated star power after qualifying. Australia and Serbia are also among the favorites. Nations like Spain or Slovenia with star Luka Doncic still have the chance to join the field of participants shortly before the Olympics through the four qualifying tournaments.
