So far, the World Cup games of the German basketball players can only be seen on MagentaSport. The final premiere from Asia will also be shown on ZDF on Sunday.
The World Cup final for German basketball players will also be broadcast on classic television on Sunday (2:40 p.m.). ZDF agreed on a sublicense agreement with the rights holder Telekom. The second and Telekom announced this on Friday after the DBB team’s surprising victory in the semi-final against the USA. The final against Serbia can also be watched as a stream on MagentaSport at no additional cost.
“With our agreement with ZDF, we are once again underlining the importance of this tournament and this great success,” said MagentaTV boss Arnim Butzen, commenting on the contract with the public broadcaster. “The team’s outstanding sporting achievements deserve the biggest possible stage in Germany.”
Basketball on classic TV: ZDF initially canceled
ZDF sports director Yorck Polus said: “We are pleased to broadcast this crowning conclusion to the World Cup live. This was made possible, among other things, by the willingness to cooperate of the owner of the German broadcast rights for the Basketball World Cup.”
Telekom had acquired the rights a long time ago and had already declared its willingness to resell live rights to television stations at the start of the knockout phase. TV providers such as RTL, ProSiebenSat.1 as well as ARD and ZDF had canceled in the past few days. Last year, RTL entered the home European Championship for three games from the quarter-finals onwards and achieved good ratings.
The Telekom broadcaster has so far shown all German games in the World Cup tournament for free and only charged money for the remaining games. Access to the German games is open to everyone, free of charge and possible without registration, explained Butzen. The direct route is on the Internet via the address “magentasport.de”. Other options include the MagentaSport apps.
