Laura Siegemund has a great chance for the second double coup in New York. At the US Open she reached the final with Vera Swonarewa. Something is different than 2020.
Tennis player Laura Siegemund has reached the doubles final at the US Open and only needs one win for her second triumph in New York after 2020.
The 35-year-old Swabian won alongside her Russian playing partner Vera Swonarewa 6:4, 6:1 in 86 minutes against the duo Jennifer Brady from the USA and Luisa Stefani from Brazil. The final on Sunday will be against Gabriela Dabrowski from Canada and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe.
Siegemund and Swonarewa were quickly ahead 4-0 in the semi-final game, but lost three games in a row due to a weak phase. The duo caught themselves and Siegemund scored a lot of points with their strong play at the net. “We prepared well and had a good strategy,” said the German. “We made it so they didn’t have their best day. I’m very proud of us.”
Last title in New York without fans
The two had already won the doubles title at the Grand Slam tournament in New York three years ago, back then under Corona conditions without fans. “We love playing here in New York. We enjoy the atmosphere,” Swonarewa said.
Siegemund was narrowly eliminated in three sets in the individual competition at the start against the American crowd favorite Coco Gauff. She then complained about the behavior of the audience, who at times booed her.
