Buenos Aires, September 9 (NA) — The number 1 in the ATP ranking Carlos Alcaraz said goodbye to the US Open, after falling 6-7, 1-
6, 6-3 and 3-6 against Daniil Medvedev (3) in a great match and was fired with honors for his play. The Russian tennis player will be Djokovic’s rival in Sunday’s final.
In an intense and dynamic duel, not an event for the faint of heart, the Russian played at his best level, appealing to his powerful forehand and making the Spaniard run all over the back of the court. His first serve effectiveness was 67% and he hit 10 aces.
The key to victory was winning the first set with a tie break of 7-6 (7) and the second 6-1. The Spaniard reacted by winning the third set with a 3-6 victory but the Russian was cool-headed to close the match at the right time with a 6-3.
Earlier, the Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic had advanced to the final of the US Open, after beating the American Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-2 and 7-6 (7-4 in the tie break) and was one victory away from accumulate his 24th ‘Major’ competition throughout his career.
At the Arthur Ashe stadium in the Flushing Meadows complex, after two hours and 41 minutes of fighting, Djokovic won a ticket to the final and managed to qualify for all the 2023 definitions in Grand Slam tournaments: he won the titles in Australia and Roland Garros , but lost to the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon, in five sets.
The grand final will be this Sunday between Djokovic and Medvedev, so the Serbian is going for his twenty-fourth Grand Slam, while the Russian is for his second. The 2021 final is reissued.
