At the Sachsenring, Thomas Preining had to give up the lead he had regained with second place on Saturday in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) on Sunday. The 25-year-old from Linz from the Manthey EMA team drove his neon yellow Porsche Grello to fifth place – 4.744 seconds behind the Viennese Lamborghini driver Mirko Bortolotti, who drives with an Italian license, who took the lead in the overall ranking with 173 points. But Preining (162) and the Swiss Audi man Ricardo Feller (148) are lying in wait four races before the end of the season.
“The anticipation for the home event is huge, it’s the coolest event”says Preining with a view to the Spielberg weekend (September 22nd to 24th) at the Red Bull Ring, where he celebrated the second of his three DTM successes to date last year. The showdown will then take place from October 20th to 22nd at the Hockenheimring.
Yesterday, Preining was racing to catch up after finishing eleventh in qualifying. “It was brutal, I had to give 1000 percent until the end”the Upper Austrian reported: “At the start I was able to stay out of everything and then make up places. Luckily I have the best team behind me, everything worked perfectly.” Also the overtaking maneuver against Thierry Vermeulen (Lamborghini): “It was a fierce battle with him, he was fast.”
Lucas Auer (Mercedes) didn’t have luck on his side. Gerhard Berger’s nephew couldn’t get past 15th place after a retirement on Saturday.
