The 28-year-old Styrian from Team Fenix was intercepted a few centimeters before the finish line by the Italian Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE) on Friday in Yverdon-les-Bains/Switzerland. Schrempf thus bitterly missed the overall lead.
On the 144.1 km long stage with start and finish in Yverdon, Schrempf attacked around 3 km from the finish, gained a small lead and would have celebrated the stage victory without a celebration pose. After the faux pas, the former track and field athlete, who only changed sports two years ago, is now four seconds behind Bertizzolo in the overall standings, four seconds behind Bertizzolo. Top favorite Demi Vollering from the Netherlands and mountain bike Olympic champion Jolanda Neff from Switzerland also crossed the finish line at the same time as the top riders.
The second edition of the women’s Tour de Romandie takes place over three stages; the preliminary decision in the overall ranking will probably come on Saturday on the mountainous stage from Romont to Torgon. The tour ends in Nyon on Sunday.
