The red-white-red doubles defeated the pairing of Nuno Borges/Francisco Cabral 7:6(0),7:6(5) in the Multiverse in front of 1,600 fans. ÖTV captain Jürgen Melzer then surprised with a change, because it was not Sebastian Ofner, but Dennis Novak who played the singles against Borges.

Pain in Ofner’s lower back is the reason for the change. After being 2-0 down from the previous day, Melzer’s team has their backs against the wall on the second day of this World Group I encounter. The quartet has to win all three possible games in order to turn a 0:2 into a 3:2 for the first time in history.

In the event of a defeat, Austria will have to play on February 2nd/3rd. or February 3/4, 2024 against relegation from World Group I. The winner will play in the qualifying round on the same date for a place in the Davis Cup final tournament in the fall.
