Manuel Neuer will not be part of the national team squad again for the last international matches of the year. But the Bayern goalkeeper has his sights set on the home European Championship – as number 1.
Manuel Neuer will not return to the German national football team after his successful comeback at FC Bayern Munich in the last international matches of this year. The 37-year-old announced this after discussions with national coach Julian Nagelsmann and DFB goalkeeper coach Andreas Kronenberg.
“The fact is that I won’t travel to the national team. There are also medical reasons. There are still a lot of games until winter,” said Neuer before Bayern’s Champions League game against Galatasaray Istanbul on Wednesday. It will be his first premier class appearance after seriously breaking his leg in December 2022.
Neuer has now played two Bundesliga games and one DFB Cup game. “I’m glad that it worked so well,” said the 2014 world champion. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel called Neuer’s comeback performance “sensational” and believes he can not only return to his old level of performance, but also become even better.
Neuer’s goal: home European Championships in 2024
After Bayern’s 4-0 win in Dortmund last weekend, there was another exchange with the DFB coaching staff, reported Neuer. Ex-Bayern coach Nagelsmann will announce his squad on Friday for the home game on Saturday next week in Berlin against Turkey and three days later in Vienna against Austria. It was expected that Neuer’s return would not be an issue again until the first international matches in 2024 at the earliest.
Neuer emphasized that everything that comes after the most serious injury of his career is “a bonus” for him. “I’m happy that I can just play football again.” Nevertheless, he wants to attack again in the DFB selection next year. And his goal is not only to be there at the home European Championship next June, but also to be in goal again if possible. “No matter which team I play in, I always want to be on the pitch,” said the 117-time international player clearly.
Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona is currently number 1 in the DFB team. During the national team’s trip to the USA, the 31-year-old also expressed his desire to be in the DFB goal for the first time at a major tournament next year. Since 2010, Neuer has played all World Cup and European Championship tournaments as German number 1.
