The Donau family proved their solidarity: “Very emotional” was how the still stunned sports director Kurt Baumgartner described the ceremony to say goodbye to Marko Varga. On Friday, the Hungarian scored his first goal for the national football league team, but a few hours later he was dead: he died in a traffic accident at the age of 26.
“He liked it so much with us. He always has about it Danube-Family spoke,” said Baumgartner on the weekend. This will also now be there for Varga’s partner and his son – not just with financial help in the form of a fundraiser or a charity game. “We can Marko not replace them, but we will not abandon them.”
Team manager Werner Stumpf had organized the touching farewell. There were many tears among the 300 mourners, including Varga’s mother, who had traveled from Hungary – especially when Varga’s four-year-old son got his wish fulfilled: he received his father’s clothes.
The tragic accident left the entire football family in a state of mourning. Minutes of mourning were held in many places, including at LASK on Sunday before the home game against Sturm Graz.
