Champions League: Like a “football god”: Lots of praise for BVB defense chief Hummels

Mats Hummels plays a key role in BVB’s 3-1 win in Milan. The veteran’s strong performance contributed to BVB’s early entry into the round of 16 of the Champions League.

TV expert Matthias Sammer said he was “world class”, sports director Sebastian Kehl raved about his “outstanding performance” and coach Edin Terzic even compared him to a “football god”.

The performance of Dortmund defense chief Mats Hummels in the 3:1 (1:1) coup at San Siro commanded great respect from everyone involved. With great duel strength and impressive build-up play, the 34-year-old veteran became the best player on the pitch in the duel with AC Milan.

“Today we can be proud”

Not least thanks to his gala, BVB moved into the round of 16 early on the second-to-last matchday of what was probably the most difficult Champions League group. “It’s definitely a sign that we’ve grown up. Today we can be proud,” commented the national player. The 2014 world champion was reminiscent of Borussia’s less convincing games on the European stage in the past. “In the past, we often broke away in away games like this – when things got tough.”

Despite all the praise, Hummels remained self-critical: “I’ve been a little too inconsistent for my liking in the last few weeks. That’s why I hope that the basic level will now return to where it once was.”

Performances like those in Milan should also help you get a regular place in the national team. “Mats has seen and experienced everything in football. He is important not only because of his quality, but also because of his experience. He played an incredibly great game and gave us a lot of security,” praised Terzic.
