The team led by basketball superstar LeBron James won the first final of the newly introduced Cup tournament (In-Season Tournament) against the Indiana Pacers with 126:109 on Saturday in Las Vegas. Each player on the winning team received prize money of 500,000 US dollars (464,000 euros). The man of the game was Lakers star Anthony Davis with 41 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks.
When the Pacers had cut the lead to 99:105, Davis scored ten points in a row, eliminating any doubts about success. “He just dominated. That was a dominant performance like Shaquille O’Neal,” James compared his teammate to a real Lakers legend. James also played a solid game with 24 points and eleven rebounds. The 38-year-old was also named most valuable player in the tournament, which was held for the first time.
“Records will be broken, but what will never be broken is being the first to do something,” James said. The NBA reintroduced the In-Season Tournament to add more excitement to the early stages of the season. All 30 teams in the North American Professional League took part. A group phase was followed by knockout games from the quarterfinals onwards. Except for the final, all games counted for the regular season, which runs until April. This is followed by the play-offs, in which the championship is at stake.
