“Absolute madness”: Schulte sensationally won World Cup gold

The 23-year-old Tyrolean triumphed on Sunday ahead of local hero Julia Taubitz (+0.104 seconds) and her Tyrolean teammate Madeleine Egle (+0.175). At the end of the title fights, the Austrian team relay clearly missed out on the precious metal in sixth place after several mistakes.

“A super awesome weekend”

After nine competitions, the Austrian Toboggan Association won the medal table with nine medals (4x gold, 3x silver, 2x bronze) clearly ahead of Germany (3/2/2) and was able to look forward to the most successful world championship in history. “An amazing weekend,” said Nico Gleirscher. Riccardo Schöpf was also overjoyed: “You have to praise the whole team.”

In addition to Schulte, the doubles Juri Gatt and Schöpf as well as Selina Egle and Lara Kipp also won gold, while David Gleirscher celebrated victory in the sprint singles. Last year in Oberstdorf, Germany won eight gold medals and a total of 16 medals. At that time, the ÖRV won one title and eight medals.

First single precious metal since 1997

For the ÖRV women, Schulte’s triumph on Sunday was the first individual world championship title in 64 years and the first individual medal at world championships since 1997. “I’m overjoyed. I’m happy and honored by that,” said Schulte on ORF after the fourth gold for red-white-red overwhelmed. At the finish she was celebrated by her supervisors and colleagues with a cheering grape on the sled. “The way I was received was simply wonderful.”

Egle was also happy for her colleague. “Lisa as world champion, absolute madness. It’s really good for me too because my body was exhausted. The medal is really great.” The 25-year-old European champion, who started with poor health, also won her first individual World Cup medal with bronze. Hannah Prock had to settle for tenth place. After a moment of shock in the first run, Barbara Allmaier took 18th place. The 20-year-old had a serious fall shortly before the finish, but was able to get back to the start a short time later.

Team relay with carvers

In the team relay, Schulte and Gatt/Schöpf made a mistake shortly before the finish, and after Nico Gleirscher, Egle/Kipp also didn’t make a run to the finish without a mistake. “The race wasn’t on our side, but we delivered great performances all weekend,” said Gleirscher. The gap to the victorious local hero Germany was 3.776 seconds. The USA (+0.358) took silver ahead of Latvia (+0.406). Two weeks ago, the red-white-red relay team won European Championship gold in Innsbruck-Igls.
