Austria’s alpine clubs are expecting moderate figures. On average, a mountaineer climbs 300 meters in an hour while ascending, and a little more, around 500, descending. For those who have touring skis under their feet, at least things go faster downhill.
Jakob Hermann, 36 years old, has often turned this calculation upside down in recent years. Last Saturday, however, Hermann hit the slopes, leaving even competitive alpinists perplexed.
Hermann climbed 24,242 meters in 24 hours. To do this, he had to cover the same route, namely the Königslehen piste in Radstadt, 34 times.
Potatoes, rice and banana bread
Not only is this extremely strenuous (and a bit crazy), but it’s also a new world record: Kilian Jornet, who is undisputedly considered an alpine climber in the scene Luminary, had in February 2019 in Norway 23,486 completed in 24 hours.
Hermann’s secret recipe: potatoes, rice and homemade banana bread.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to be on touring skis for 24 hours at a time and see how many meters in altitude I can manage,” says Hermann. A difficult dream, but one that came true on Sunday at 3 p.m.
“The thing that challenged me the most was running overnight in 14 hours of darkness. Now I’m overjoyed and proud that I did it. Even though there were three laps, I would have liked to sit down in the forest and cry,” says the 36 year old.
Hermann climbed 1010 meters per hour for 24 hours. A brand that will probably last longer.
