Less than 48 hours after he became European champion with France’s national handball team in the final in Cologne (33:31 nV against Denmark), Benoit Kounkoud was temporarily arrested in Paris.
The 26-year-old, who was released after a day in custody, is accused of attempted rape.

The investigation is continuing “to collect further witness statements,” the prosecutor’s office told AFP.
In a Parisian nightclub
A woman accuses Kounkoud of having committed the alleged act on Tuesday night in a nightclub in the eighth arrondissement of Paris – two days after the European Championship final.
As the French “L’ Equipe” reports, “the national player is said to have pulled down his pants while drunk and tried to sexually harass a young woman.”
He was then held by a security guard and handed over to the police. “My client was released and he denies the facts,” Kounkoud’s lawyer Mario Stasi later told AFP. It is the presumption of innocence.
At the European Championships, Kounkoud did not go beyond the role of a supplementary player. The winger was also used in the French’s 33:28 victory over the Austrians. One of his two attempts ended up in the goal.
