The first goal at the Table Tennis World Championships has been achieved: the German men have secured Olympic qualification. Now we also want a World Cup medal.
The German men’s national table tennis team has qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Dang Qiu (Borussia Düsseldorf), Dimitrij Ovtcharov (TTC Neu-Ulm) and Patrick Franziska (1. FC Saarbrücken) advanced to the quarter-finals of the Team World Cup in South Korea with a 3-0 win against Iran on Wednesday.
The top eight of this tournament, the six continental champions, the host France and the first in the world rankings are at the Olympics.
At the World Championships in Busan, national coach Jörg Roßkopf’s team wants to win another medal. The Germans lost the final against China in Chengdu in 2022 and in Halmstad in 2018. Once again, Ovtcharov and Co. can only meet the big favorites in the final at the earliest.
