Bundesliga: Record victory: Flensburg’s handball players defeat Kiel in the derby

SG Flensburg-Handewitt prevailed over their arch rivals from Kiel with 33:26. The 40th success in the North Classic is also the highest in the opponent’s hall.

The Bundesliga handball players from SG Flensburg-Handewitt clearly won the 110th Schleswig-Holstein derby against THW Kiel. The 33:26 (13:10) away win was the SG’s 40th success and also the highest in the Kiel Arena.

The best throwers were Patrick Wiencek and Petter Överby with four goals each for Kiel and Johannes Golla with nine goals for SG. With 39:11 points, Flensburg remains third in the table. The THW fell back to fifth place with 34:14 points and can probably write off a Champions League start in the coming season.

The hosts had to do without Hendrik Pekeler at short notice. The defense specialist suffered a foot injury during training. After a bad start by both teams, the guests from Flensburg found their rhythm better. National team captain Golla scored in the 12th minute to make it 6:3 for the SG, Austrian Boris Zivkovic increased the score to 13:8 for the guests with his first derby goal (29th).

With five goals in a row, Kiel equalized to 13:13 two minutes after the break. Now the game, which was rather unspectacular in the first half, really took off. The Flensburg team fended off the onslaught of their arch-rivals and were ahead again by five goals after Jim Gottfridsson made it 22:17 (42nd). THW coach Filip Jicha took his last time out in the 50th minute. But that didn’t change anything about Flensburg’s victory in the Northern Classic.
