Ice hockey: Polar bears are planning championship celebrations on the North Sea

The Eisbären Berlin are only one win away from their tenth championship in the DEL. This should happen on Friday in Bremerhaven. Fischtown coach Popiesch calls for more discipline.

The Eisbären Berlin have no desire for a championship celebration at home. The tenth title in the German Ice Hockey League is to be celebrated on Friday on the North Sea.

“We obviously want to take advantage of our first chance now,” said Berlin national defender Kai Wissmann after the 4-1 (1-0, 0-1, 3-0) win on Tuesday in the fourth final game against the Fischtown Pinguins from Bremerhaven. After victories, the Eisbären lead 3-1 in the best-of-seven series and now have three chances to make it another championship.

The first opportunity to do this is on Friday (7.30 p.m./MagentaSport) in Bremerhaven. “We’re approaching the game as if it were game seven for us,” said Wissmann, who warned against being too cocky: “We know that it’s far from over.”

In fact, the game on Tuesday was more evenly balanced than the result said. “We were clearly the better team in the second third. It’s hard to go out with a defeat after a game like that,” said Bremerhaven coach Thomas Popiesch. “The team showed that they are in the series.”

“We are here for the tenth title”

In particular, triple goalscorer Ty Ronning, who moved up in the line-up due to the injury of national striker Marcel Noebels, was unstoppable in the majority. “The effectiveness of the polar bears was crucial,” said Popiesch. “If we take too many penalties on offense like we did today, it will be difficult.”

Ronning lost the final against EHC Red Bull Munich last season with ERC Ingolstadt. “This time it should be the other way around. We are here for the tenth title,” said the Canadian.
