Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka: Julian Nagelsmann is apparently sacrificing both

The squad nomination for the European Football Championship is in full swing, but two names have not yet been mentioned: Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka. National coach Julian Nagelsmann will probably do without both of them.

These are still unconfirmed media reports, but there is a lot to suggest that they are true: national coach Julian Nagelsmann will not name long-time national players Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka in the squad for the European Football Championship. This is reported by both the “Bild” newspaper and the pay channel Sky. The German Football Association had already announced some names in a unique campaign over the past few days via various media and platforms. On Thursday, the entire squad will finally be presented via video at a press conference.

The possible exclusion of Hummels in particular is likely to cause some discussion. The 35-year-old professional is having an outstanding season and is in the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund. If it were only based on the performance principle propagated by Nagelsmann, Hummels would actually have to be there. The same applies to the experienced Bayern professional Goretzka, who has overcome his form crisis. The central defender and the midfielder were there in the first games with the new national coach in autumn 2023.

Julian Nagelsmann apparently doesn’t see either of them as the ideal choice

There were signs of a price swing in the spring. Nagelsmann chose not to take the two of them for the friendly matches against France and the Netherlands; instead he called up four VfB Stuttgart players because, as Nagelsmann said, they had the “momentum”. That means: They were currently in the best form.

If you look at it superficially, the national coach is now violating his own standards if he does without Hummels and Goretzka. But Nagelsmann also emphasized that it’s not just about the best players, but about the best team. He made it clear in the big interview on Magenta TV. Regarding the general reason why he gave up Hummels in March, he said: “Because I had the feeling that the other one would fit a little better into the role that I intended. Then I can ask again, why isn’t he there. This is a wheel that can be turned infinitely, in the end I have to make the decision.”

Apparently Nagelsmann does not see Hummels and Goretzka as the ideal fit for the roles he intended, on and off the pitch. And he decided, just as national coaches did before him.
