Cycling: “Ride in another world”: Pogacar dominates the Giro

Who should stop Tadej Pogacar? The question can currently be answered simply: nobody. He flexes his muscles impressively on the queen stage of the Giro.

Tadej Pogacar continues to give the competition no chance at the 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia. After 15 stages and before the next section, the impression that existed before the start of the Tour of Italy is confirmed: the cycling star dominates at will. After his fourth day’s victory in the queen stage on Sunday, it currently seems unthinkable that another cyclist will receive the “Trofeo Senza Fine” for the Giro victory in Rome on June 26th. Only a fall or illness could stop the Slovenian.

“Today was one of the best days for me,” said Pogacar after his spectacular climbing show. Even before the tour, he was looking forward to the queen stage. His biggest competitor Geraint Thomas was full of admiration after Pogacar’s next dominant performance: “He’s simply on a different level. He drives in a different world.”

Pogacar doubles lead

The two-time Tour de France winner had doubled his lead on the 15th section. Pogacar is now enthroned in the overall standings with an almost unassailable 6:41 minutes ahead of the Brit Thomas, 6:56 minutes ahead of Daniel Felipe Martinez from the top German team Bora-hansgrohe. According to Giro organizers, it is the largest gap between first and second after 15 stages at the Giro since 1954.

At the weekend, the 25-year-old had already shown his class on Saturday. Although he came second in the individual time trial on Lake Garda, he lost to former world champion Filippo Ganna. But the Slovenian extended his lead in the overall ranking one day before the masterpiece in the Mottolino ski area – and then increased his lead again on the extremely demanding mountain stage.
