Rafael Nadal could have played his last yesterday Roland Garros by losing 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the first round of the Paris tournament. He pocketed $79,000 for being eliminated in the round of 16, but that pales in comparison to what the Spaniard has earned at the French Open over the past two decades.

In 19 appearances in the tournament, Nadal lifted the Musketeers Cup 14 times, a record, and won $23.7 million. That represents about 18% of his career earnings of $134.7 million, second all-time behind Novak Djokovic’s $181.6 million.

In fact, the prize money Nadal won at Roland Garros alone ranks 21st on the all-time winnings list among male tennis players across all tournaments.

Nadal did not officially announce that 2024 would be the last time he plays the French Open, but he has repeatedly said in interviews that he is close to retiring. The 37-year-old played only 16 games in the last 18 months and suffered various injuries.

His 14 titles at Roland Garros are the most any player has ever achieved in a single event. Nadal won four tournaments without losing a set and was victorious in seven finals in which he conceded 10 games or less to his opponent. Both Open Era records for all majors.

As dominant as Nadal has been on clay, he remains one of the sport’s greats regardless of the surface. If Nadal had never set foot at Roland Garros, he would still be in the top 10 in Open Era Grand Slam championships and third all-time in prize money.
