Football: Olympiacos Piraeus wins Conference League title

AS Roma, West Ham United and now Olympiacos Piraeus – the Conference League has its third winner. In Athens, AC Florence lost its second final in a row.

Olympiakos Piraeus is the first Greek football club to win a European Cup. 20 years after the European title for the Greek national team under German coach Otto Rehhagel, Piraeus won the final of the Conference League in Athens against AC Florence 1-0 (0-0) after extra time.

Ayoub El Kaabi secured the victory with his goal in the 116th minute. The Italians, however, had already lost the final of the Conference League last season.

Piraeus is the third title holder in the young competition after AS Roma and West Ham United. Piraeus’ coach Jose Luis Medilibar, who only took over the team in February, won the Europa League title with Sevilla FC last season.

In an intense first half, which was also played erratically by both teams, chances to score were in short supply. A goal by Nikola Milenkovic (9th minute) for Florence was disallowed for offside. Olympiakos goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis thwarted two opportunities by Giacomo Bonaventura within a minute. At the other end, Daniel Podence’s header from a corner was saved by the Italian goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano.

The second half also remained at a manageable level with a constant stream of bad passes on both sides. The Florentines had Olympiakos striker Ayoub El Kaabi, who had scored five goals in the semi-final against Aston Villa alone, under control at all times – until the 116th minute. Accepted after a lengthy review by the video assistant.

The match was classified as a high-risk game. Strict security measures and traffic regulations were in place to ensure everything ran smoothly, the police said. The authorities even said they had drawn up a special operational plan. Shortly before the end of the first half, there were clashes in the stadium between supporters of Piraeus and Florence, which led to a police operation in the stands.
