Record winner Real Madrid has underlined its dominance in European football with another Champions League victory. The Spaniards triumphed in the final on Saturday against a Borussia Dortmund that had been playing strongly for a long time at London’s Wembley Stadium with a lackluster 2-0 (0-0) and thus celebrated their 15th title in the “premier class”. Despite his cruciate ligament tear, ÖFB star David Alaba was allowed to sit on the substitutes’ bench, while Marcel Sabitzer played the full game for BVB.

Full-back Dani Carvajal put the Spanish champions on course for victory in front of 86,212 spectators in the 74th minute with a header from a corner by Toni Kroos. Before that, BVB, who had been superior for long stretches, had wasted a number of great chances. Goalscorer Vinicius Jr. scored the decisive goal in the 83rd minute after a serious error in Dortmund’s build-up play. Niclas Füllkrug’s supposed goal (87th) was correctly disallowed for offside.

Sabitzer missed the crowning of a strong performance

Sabitzer, who was the second Austrian after Alaba to appear in a CL final and put in a strong performance in the first half, missed the crowning moment of his career so far. In the 43rd minute, the ÖFB international was shown a yellow card for criticism. London was once again a place of misfortune for the fifth-placed team in the German Bundesliga; eleven years ago, Dortmund lost the CL final there against Bayern Munich 2-1.

Spain’s champions, on the other hand, managed the double, winning all nine finals since the Champions League was founded in 1992/93. Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team gave Alaba his fourth Champions League title and the German midfield director Kroos a dream farewell to club football before he retires after the European Championships at home.
