So far, much has gone as expected at the clay court classic in Paris. But not many predicted Alex De Minaur’s round of 16 victory against Daniil Medvedev.
Australian tennis pro Alex De Minaur caused a surprise at the French Open in Paris and reached the quarterfinals. The 25-year-old defeated world number five Daniil Medvedev from Russia 4:6, 6:2, 6:1, 6:3.
For De Minaur, who feels much more comfortable on hard courts, this is only the second quarter-final at a Grand Slam tournament. The Australian, who defeated the German professional Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round, could be Alexander Zverev’s opponent in the quarter-finals. But for that to happen, the Olympic champion must win his match this evening (not before 8:15 p.m.) against the Dane Holger Rune.
Medvedev went into the duel with De Minaur as the favorite, although the Russian is not a clay court expert either. With the score at 2:3 in the second set, the 2021 US Open winner had to be treated for blisters on his feet. After that, things didn’t go well for him.
