After a long search, Bayern are going into the new season with Vincent Kompany as coach. The Belgian must deliver success quickly, says former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
According to Munich supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the new Bayern coach Vincent Kompany will not be given a long grace period.
“I wish him every success, because if you don’t win a title for a year as Bayern Munich, it’s already a year too many,” said the former Bayern CEO at a manager’s meeting in Bielefeld, according to “Bild”. Kompany signed a three-year contract with the German record champions last week after a turbulent search for a coach.
Rummenigge was rather distant about the 38-year-old Belgian, whom he had not yet met. Sports director Max Eberl was “convinced by this relatively young and not very experienced man,” said Rummenigge. “I think he represents the right philosophy. I asked Pep Guardiola, who had him as a player for a long time. He said he was convinced that he is an exciting coach,” added the 68-year-old.
Rummenigge: Kompany knows what pressure is
For weeks, Bayern had caused a stir with a somewhat chaotic search for a coach. First, preferred candidates Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick, among others, had turned down the offer. Then the attempt to reverse the termination of Thomas Tuchel’s contract, which had already been agreed in February, failed. In the end, Kompany was signed by Premier League relegated club Burnley FC.
“You must not forget that Bayern Munich plays relatively offensive and dominant football. He represents this philosophy,” said Rummenigge. Kompany also knows what pressure is from his time as a player at Manchester City.
