Athletics: No more problems: Sprinter Lückenkemper fit for European Championships

The German medal contenders Gina Lückenkemper, Gesa Felicitas Krause and Malaika Mihambo are getting ready for the European Championships. Recent health problems have been overcome.

Gina Lückenkemper is fit and determined to go into the European Athletics Championships in Rome, where the sprinter wants to defend her titles in the 100 metres and with the German relay team. The 27-year-old has not competed since the meeting in Dessau-Roßlau two weeks ago, where she had to forego the final due to minor muscular problems.

The muscles no longer caused any problems after treatment, reported Lückenkemper. She wants to write a new chapter of success, said the Westphalian-born athlete, who competes for SCC Berlin. “We can look forward to exciting races because we are all so close together,” said Lückenkemper, laughing and explaining: “We are running in the Olympic Stadium, Olympic stadiums suit me.” In 2018 in Berlin, she won silver in the individual event, and then two years ago in Munich she won both titles. In Rome, she will first compete in the individual event on Saturday and Sunday.

Krause also completely healthy again

Two-time European steeplechase champion Gesa Felicitas Krause says she is completely healthy after a dental operation. “Everything is fine again,” assured the 31-year-old. Krause qualified for the Olympics in Paris in her first 3000-meter steeplechase race after her maternity leave and will compete in the preliminary round this Friday. “It would be sad if I went home without a medal,” said the former World Championship third-place finisher.

Long jumper Malaika Mihambo is also relaxed and at ease going into the competitions. “I take this very seriously, it is the most important competition after Paris,” said the Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion. The 30-year-old has fully recovered from her torn muscle fiber last summer.
