At the start of the European Athletics Championships, German hopefuls make it to the medal finals.
Two-time European champion Gesa Felicitas Krause is in the European Championship final over 3000 meters steeplechase and is aiming for another medal there on Sunday evening (10:04 p.m./ARD) in Rome. The 31-year-old title holder from 2016 and 2018 finished third in the heat in the midday heat in 9:31.52 minutes. Lea Meyer crossed the finish line ahead of her, the European Championship runner-up from Munich ran 9:30.63 minutes. The Romanian Stella Rutto won in 9:30.00 minutes.
Olivia Gürth made it into the final in seventh place in the other heat despite a fall on the last lap. The Frenchwoman Flavie Renouard even landed headfirst in the water ditch, exhausted.
“You have to be in the top eight. I don’t have to run at the front either, it’s super hot, it leaves its mark on everyone,” said Krause about her race on ARD. She qualified for her fourth Olympic Games in two months in Paris in the first steeplechase race after her maternity leave, and Meyer will also be there.
At the start of the first day of competition, shot putter Yemisi Ogunleye from Mannheim easily qualified for the final that evening (9.33 p.m./ARD). The World Championship runner-up only managed 18.40 meters in front of only a few spectators.
