Max Verstappen is heading for his fourth consecutive world championship title. Despite his victory, the Formula 1 star is not entirely satisfied in Canada.
Even after six wins in nine races this season, Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen still sees a lot of potential for improvement. “We have things we need to work on and areas where we can still improve the car a lot,” said the Red Bull driver after his hard-fought triumph on Sunday at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal: “We will analyze everything and try to improve.”
After nine of 24 races, Verstappen leads the World Championship with a 56-point lead over Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari. However, things are not going as perfectly as they did last season, when his opponents often had no chance. Bumps and curbs in particular are causing his car a lot of problems. “We know that’s a weakness. It limits our performance and we’ll work on it now,” said Verstappen, looking ahead to the next Grand Prix in Barcelona in two weeks.
In addition, the competition is also getting closer. Both McLaren and Mercedes have improved significantly, with Ferrari being the only disappointment in Canada with two retirements and a weak performance in qualifying. “It’s become more challenging, no question about it. But we’re still ahead,” said three-time world champion Verstappen, but added: “We can’t afford even small mistakes, every detail counts.”
Animal encounters on the route
On the way to his third consecutive victory in Canada, the world championship leader had an encounter with a marmot. “He was almost dead. At first I thought it was a piece of debris from a car,” said Verstappen. On lap 32, the animal ran in front of his car in the last chicane. “I had to brake for him because I certainly didn’t want him to be in the car with me. You don’t want to hit a marmot like that,” said Verstappen.
