Remembering the shining light Franz Beckenbauer
Her husband Franz Beckenbauer died on January 7th at the age of 78 after a long, serious illness. Beckenbauer was and is the shining light of German football. The “Kaiser” celebrated numerous successes with FC Bayern in the 1970s. As captain, he led the DFB team to the European Championship title in 1972 and to the World Cup in 1974 in his own country. In 1990 he became world champion as national coach, and later played a key role in organizing the World Cup summer fairytale of 2006. Later, a shadow fell on his work because there were dubious payments surrounding the awarding of the World Cup to Germany that were never clarified.
