European Football Championship: Octopuses and mini pigs – the story of the animal oracles

This time, a tapir is also involved as a football oracle, as the German Press Agency reports. Theo, the lowland tapir from Münster Zoo, is supposed to use his great nose to predict the results of the German national team’s matches. With Theo, it works like this: The tapir chooses between three balls: two are painted in the colors of the competing teams, the third represents a draw. To ensure that Theo’s decision is not manipulated, all three balls are filled with the same food, the zoo recently announced. The first ball that the tapir nibbles from then represents the tip of the European Championship oracle.

Zoo visitors can see what the oracle decides every weekday before a Germany match at 10 a.m. Many zoos use this PR gimmick to advertise themselves during major football tournaments.

None of his successors can compare to the old octopus Paul

It all started with the famous octopus Paul from Sealife Oberhausen, who gave his tips for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Paul’s fame was due to his 100% hit rate. He also had no competition. But just two years later, things were different. Animal oracles were sprouting up like mushrooms, so it was easy to lose track.

None of Paul’s imitators were anywhere near as successful and loved as the old octopus. We take a look back at the animals that put themselves at the service of their zoos. Of course, this is only a small selection; to show them all would have exceeded the scope of this photo series.
