When the official team photo was taken, Emre Can was right in the middle of it all after his late nomination for the European Football Championship.
The 30-year-old captain of Borussia Dortmund took the place of Bayern Munich’s youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic in Herzogenaurach, who is out of the home tournament after an infection. Can is also taking over Pavlovic’s jersey number 25 for the European Championship. In the photo he was standing in the second row next to his BVB colleague Nico Schlotterbeck.
The DFB squad completed its final training session for the opening match on Friday (9 p.m./ZDF and MagentaTV) against Scotland at the European Championship camp in Franconia before travelling to the matchday quarters in Munich. All 26 players were on the pitch. National coach Julian Nagelsmann can now plan his dream eleven for the first group match.
“If we get off to a good start in the tournament, we will bring the momentum to our side. Then people will be much more positive and emotionally motivated and will be able to carry us even further,” said 33-year-old Ilkay Gündogan, who will lead the DFB team into a tournament as captain for the first time.
